چکیده

The behavior of vehicular traffic is subject to many irregularities and stochastic fluctuations. Thus, our success in solving a variety of traffic management and optimizations tasks, such as accident detection or optimal vehicle routing, depends heavily on our ability to adequately model, reason about and predict such a behavior. The objective of this work is to develop a probabilistic model of traffic flows on highway networks that is realistic from the point of applications and at the same time supports efficient learning and inference. We study a number of multivariate probabilistic models, including the multivariate Gaussian model and the conditional autoregressive model and analyze their advantages. To address the efficiency concerns we develop a mixture of Gaussian trees model – and show its advantages in learning and inference with respect to alternatives. The performance of all models is analyzed on real-world traffic flow data obtained from the network of sensors installed on major highways in a metropolitan area.

Important Highways for Intercity Travel - Possible Additions to the Interstate System After 1972

Highway planning is a process wherein a highway network con sidered adequate to meet both the present and future traffic demands of an auto-oriented, ever-growing populace is visualized. It is also the process in which a procedure designed to implement the plan should be formulated. The first step in the planning process is the determination of high way needs. The elimination of these needs r...

Quantification of Latent Travel Demand on New Urban Facilities in the State of Texas

I recent years there has been a growing concern over the congested conditions of our urban highway facilities. The continuing escalation of adverse driving conditions in major urban areas has generated a feeling of discontent among automobile owners and transportation planners alike. One major factor that has contributed to this feeling of dissatisfaction is the rapid pace with which many of th...

Pii: S0968-090x(02)00004-9

This paper is concerned with the traffic flow stability/instability induced by a particular adaptive cruise control (ACC) policy, known as the ‘‘constant time headway (CTH) policy’’. The control policy is analyzed for a circular highway using three different traffic models, namely a microscopic model, a spatially discrete model, and a spatially continuous model. It is shown that these three dif...

Relation between Proximity of Streets in Urban Network and Parameters of Neural Network for Traffic Volume Prediction

Deep learning has become very popular as a method to predict short-term traffic volumes on road networks, especially highway networks, based on real-time observation. Various studies have confirmed that the performance of deep learning in predicting traffic volumes is better than that of previous machine learning models and statistical models. Although it is natural to consider that the traffic...

Understanding and Accommodating Risk and Uncertainty in Toll Road Projects: a Review of the Literature

Forecasting traffic and toll revenues for new highway projects involves great uncertainty due to the inherent uncertainty in the models used to make forecasts. As private investment becomes more common in project financing, quantifying the levels of risk and uncertainty associated with such projects becomes critical. This paper represents a review of many key studies and reports dealing with un...
